Originally from Upstate New York, John attended the University of Rochester, where he played on the school’s Rugby team. After graduation from U of R in 1991, John moved to Columbus where he attended Capital University Law School. While he was in Law School, he worked at the Franklin County Public Defender Office as an intern, and then eventually became the Head Law Clerk. He graduated Law School in 1995, and after passing the Ohio Bar Exam, his first job as an attorney was with a law firm known then as Maguire & Schneider LLP, now Maguire Schneider Hassay LLP.

John worked at Maguire & Schneider for a few years before deciding to join a Law School classmate and open a small private practice. There, he focused primarily on Criminal Defense, practicing throughout Central Ohio. In early 2002, John joined the Franklin County Prosecutor’s office.

At the Prosecutor’s office, John started in the Juvenile Unit, where he prosecuted a wide range of juvenile cases ranging from traffic offenses up to Felonious Assaults, Robberies, Burglaries, etc. He was then transferred to the Grand Jury Unit, where he was responsible for reviewing cases for possible presentation to the Grand Jury. He eventually worked his way up to the general Trial Staff. There, he prosecuted cases ranging from low level Felonies such as Thefts and Possession of Drugs up to Aggravated Murder. John was chosen as the Prosecutor’s representative on the Courthouse Planning Committee, and actively participated in the design of the new Franklin County Court of Common Pleas building. As an Assistant Prosecutor, John handled hundreds of criminal cases, with over 50 jury and bench trial verdicts.

John left the Prosecutor’s office in 2015, again returning to private practice, and focusing on Criminal Defense. He brought his trial skills to use by representing defendants throughout Central Ohio, and represented people charged with a wide range of charges, from speeding tickets to Aggravated Murder. One of John’s most serious cases was covered by the Dateline episode “Out There in the Dark."
John rejoined Maguire Schneider Hassay in 2020, bringing back his 27 years of experience and skills. When he’s not in Court or working on cases, he loves spending time with his 2 young children and wife Sarah. John’s other interests include mountaineering, rock climbing, and scuba diving.
