Myth!

If we weren’t married when our child was born, the father has no rights. Not true! In Ohio, when a child is born to unmarried parents, the mother is the default sole legal custodian only until the father files to establish parental rights and responsibilities. MSH Associate Brittany Gregorchik, who loves the practice of family law, said the filing of the parental rights and responsibilities complaint is what starts the process to give the father rights. Once he files, he is then seen as equal to the mother in the eyes of the law. Parental rights can be confusing, but you don’t have to navigate them alone.
