Addressing the rural lawyer shortage

Wayne Hassay, Managing Partner of Maguire Schneider Hassay, posted the following this morning:

Efforts to address the rural lawyer shortage are growing and promising initiatives are underway. But while we build for the future, there is real opportunity in the present.
Lawyers in rural communities work tirelessly, but they are stretched thin. With the right tools, more people can be helped, right now.

·      Tools for remote and limited-scope services
·      Stronger referral networks across communities and counties. Helping match the right client to the right lawyer, and reducing the time and cost of client acquisition for lawyers
·      Streamlined court dockets to support regional practice and reduce travel burdens
·      Practice models that emphasize technology, affordability, and sustainability

Increasing the supply of lawyers in underserved areas may take years. We do not have to wait. We can unlock the capacity that already exists, with systems that work better for both lawyers and clients.
