Many people believe they can change names on health insurance, bank accounts, and other assets and debts immediately after filing, but that is not the case. According to MSH Associate Brittany Gregorchik, most institutions require a final divorce decree before making updates to accounts, insurance policies and other financial documents. Because the decree is not issued until the final hearing, these changes cannot occur until the divorce is finalized.
