Not entirely true. An eviction filing may not appear on your credit report, but unpaid balances (such as rent or fees) or the money judgement can be reported and impact your credit.

According to MSH Associate Dan Burns, the filing will almost certainly appear on a tenant screening report even if the balance was paid or the case dismissed, affecting your ability to rent in the future.
